Tips by Gerard’s for a regenerating beauty sleep

“Sleep is a whimsical deity and just when you summon it, it keeps you waiting”.

How often have you dreamed of (pun intended) falling asleep immediately once you hit the bed? Especially when you are under stress. You long for a sensation of instant and magical sleepiness, just like a baby, surrounded by warm, soft, and clean-scented blankets. A wonderful timeless memory.

In this article we are going to help you recreate that kind of magic thanks to Gerard’s products. It’s a promise!

What happens when you sleep?

When it comes to day-night balance, sleep could be the closest thing to a source of youth that is completely free and accessible to anyone. A good night’s sleep – eight hours are recommended – is fundamental to promote good health, including your skin’s health.

Skin works hard throughout the day to protect you against external stressors. At night, it switches from defence mode to a moment of intense cell regeneration. After a long day, sometimes, the best feeling in the world is putting your head on a soft pillow and falling asleep. Whilst you are dreaming, your body is working to get ready for a new day of meetings, work and transfers. What does “cellular repairing process’ mean? And what does it have to do with slumber and skin’s health?

Cellular regeneration

The production of new cells begins in the skin’s innermost layer, the basal layer, and moves towards the skin’s outermost layer, the dermis. Old cells in the dermis are discarded and substituted by new cells.

While cellular exchange occurs during the day, skin cells tend to regenerate more quickly at night (the process peaks between 11 PM to 4 AM).

Cellular regeneration occurs whether you are asleep or not; however, lack of sleep affects the skin during the process as it hinders optimal cellular respiration. Even melatonin produced during sleep and skin aging are linked. Melatonin, the sleep hormone, increases the more tired you get, and during the day, high levels of this hormone in the body counter skin damages caused by external stressors, such as UV rays and pollution.

Collagen VS Cortisol

Not only the amount, but also the quality of your sleep has a great impact on the way in which your skin is affected. A restless 8-hour long sleep will not provide the same benefits of 8 hours of uninterrupted shut-eye, during which you enter a state of deep sleep and your body and brain waves slow down.

During deep sleep, your body produces the growth hormone, fundamental to promote growth, reproduction and cellular regeneration.

It promotes the synthesis of collagen, therefore, if you don’t get enough good quality sleep, the production of collagen is hindered, preventing the “beauty sleep” effect.

Sleep deprivation, on the other hand, increases cortisol levels, the stress hormone. Excess cortisol leads to the production of unbalanced levels of sebum and may trigger inflammation, which, in turn, may lead to itching, redness and chronic conditions, such as dermatitis (eczema) and psoriasis. If you are already suffering from a skin condition, lack of sleep will only make it worse. Sleep deprivation is also linked to fairer skin tone and saggy mouth corners. Hydration is the key to healthy skin function, and hydration levels are influenced by the amount of sleep you get.
